The Duke of Edinburghs Award

The Miss Virginia Organization has proudly partnered with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program in efforts to continually motivate our contestants to strive for holistic excellence. The Duke of Edinburgh Award shines brightly on college applications and job résumés and sets you apart. The broad experience you gain from our program is attractive to schools and employers, and the skills learned and the lessons gained are huge and help to find your place in the world.

Through school activities and extra-curricular involvement, many youth are already fulfilling the requirements to receive the award. A wide variety of activities and skill sets satisfy the award program’s basic requirements, maintaining participant motivation and driving advancement in physical fitness, special skills, community service, and adventurous journey.

The key objective is to find an activity you already enjoy or another you find interesting and work towards improving your performance. One hour per week, participants work toward each activity or award tenant.   i.e. piano lessons, soccer practice, and volunteer work ALL satisfy the award’s requirements.

Each participant will select an activity coach to oversee their progress and sign off on their completed work.   The minimum age requirements are 14 for Bronze, 15 for Silver, and 16 for Gold.  In addition to the three areas of development, award candidates are also required to participate in an “adventurous journey,” which involves an out-of-doors expedition of their choosing (Girl Scout style)!

All of our title holders engage in most of these activities as part of their regimen to prepare for the Miss Virginia Pageant and should easily be able to qualify for this prestigious award.  The Miss Virginia organization plans an adventurous journey in the Spring and in the Fall, one that the contestants can optionally attend but would not want to miss spending time meeting their fellow contestants off stage and outside Girl Scout style.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

  •  Title holders who pursue this award will be recognized at this year’s Miss Virginia Pageant.  They will also be presented with a medal and certificate at their farewell pageant.
  • The benefits of this program are endless; the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program is internationally recognized as a trademark of young adult success. Some award recipients even obtain scholarships based on their participation in the program.  “Young people are our future. Developing them to their full potential is a top priority. One practical way to develop this huge reservoir of talent is through participation in the Award,” says Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa and anti-apartheid activist.

WHAT NOW?

  • In efforts to facilitate information collection by the National Office, we are being asked to provide a roster of title holders who will participate in this year’s award program.
  • Title holders are encouraged to pursue this worthy recognition program. Not only does it further the goals of the Miss Virginia Scholarship Pageant Organization and the Miss America Organization, but it promotes her own development and future success; adds an additional award to college applications, resumes and job applications; an additional opportunity to be recognized at the Miss VA pageant and Miss America pageant.
