Rules & Regulations

This page is for TEEN contestants. 

To Compete in a pageant a contestant must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Be a young lady between the ages of 13 and 18 as of 12/31 of competition year.

  • Must not be eligible to compete in the Miss America Competition

  • Legal resident of Virginia at least 6 months prior to local pageant competition

  • Be able to meet the time commitment and responsibilities as set forth by the local program in which you compete

  • Be in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements

  • Meet character criteria as set forth by the Miss America’s Teen Organization

  • The winner of Miss Virginia’s Teen will compete for the title of Miss America’s Teen


Areas of competition for Single/Preliminary Night and State Final Night  (updated 6/1/2023 - Descriptions subject to change)

Private Interview - 30%

The private interview is 6 minutes long at the local competition and 8 minutes long at the state competition. There are typically 5 judges on a panel. Contestants are questioned on their background as presented on their fact sheet, their educational and career goals, their opinions on current events, social issues and pop culture, and their interests, hobbies and extracurricular activities. Contestants are judged on communication skills, the ability to convey her opinion, personality and confidence. A podium will be used. The contestant may stand behind it, or on either side of it, but not in front of it.

Talent/HERStory™ – 20%

In the talent competition, judges will be looking for each contestant's artistic expression, her preparedness, technical skill, stage presence and entertainment value. Talent will be a maximum of 90 seconds. Contestants should plan a performance that will not exceed this time limit. 

Health and Fitness – 20%

The judges will be looking for overall first impressions and a sense of confidence and composure. Each contestant will perform the same fitness routine to showcase her level of fitness. Contestants at the local level should dress in appropriate fitness attire as directed by the local director.  At the state and national competitions, contestants will be provided with specific wardrobe requirements.

Evening Gown (20%) and On stage Conversation – 10%

The Evening Gown and On stage Conversatioin phase of competition is designed for the judges to assess the contestant's poise, grace, and ability to express herself. Her evening wear (not the value of the evening wear) should complement the contestant's individuality. It is permissible to wear dresses, evening pant suits, or long gowns. The onstage question will be platform related.
